Grief Is Personal — and It’s More Complex Than Most People Expect

Grief is a deeply human response to loss, yet many people feel unprepared for how it actually shows up in their lives. Whether you are grieving the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a major life transition, or a version of yourself that no longer exists, grief can feel disorienting, isolating, and overwhelming.

At SAVI Therapy Group, we understand that grief is not something to “get over.” It is something to be understood, supported, and gently integrated into your life over time. Our approach to grief counseling honors your unique experience while providing a safe, compassionate space to process loss at your own pace.

What Is Grief, Really?

Grief encompasses the emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral responses that follow loss. While it is commonly associated with death, grief can also arise from:

  • The loss of a relationship, marriage, or friendship
  • Career changes, job loss, or unmet professional goals
  • Health changes or medical diagnoses
  • Infertility, pregnancy loss, or postpartum identity shifts
  • The loss of a dream, future plan, or sense of self

Grief is not limited to sadness. It may include anger, guilt, anxiety, confusion, numbness, relief, or emotional exhaustion — sometimes all at once. Every form of loss is valid, and every grief experience deserves care.

What Grief Often Feels Like Over Time

One of the most difficult aspects of grief is its unpredictability. Many clients are surprised by how nonlinear the process can be. You may feel relatively stable one day and overwhelmed the next, triggered by memories, music, dates, or moments you didn’t anticipate.

While traditional models describe “stages of grief,” it’s important to know that grief does not follow a straight path. Common emotional experiences may include:

  • Denial or disbelief — difficulty accepting the reality of the loss
  • Anger or resentment — toward circumstances, others, or yourself
  • Bargaining or rumination — “what if” thoughts and mental replaying
  • Sadness or despair — deep emotional pain or withdrawal
  • Acceptance — learning to live with the loss, not erase it

You may revisit these experiences multiple times or feel several at once. This is normal.

Common Grief Myths That Can Make Healing Harder

At SAVI Therapy Group, we often help clients unlearn messages about grief that increase shame or isolation.

Myth: Time heals all wounds.
Truth: Time alone doesn’t heal grief — support, processing, and self-compassion do.

Myth: You should move on by now.
Truth: Grief has no expiration date. There is no “behind” in grief.

Myth: If you’re still hurting, something is wrong.
Truth: Ongoing grief is not failure; it is love adapting to loss.

Myth: Only death causes grief.
Truth: Any meaningful loss can create grief — and it all matters.

Myth: Feeling joy means you’re betraying what you lost.
Truth: Joy and grief can coexist. One does not cancel out the other.

Why Grief Support Matters

When grief goes unsupported, it can quietly impact mental health, relationships, parenting, work performance, and physical well-being. Suppressing grief often leads to increased anxiety, depression, burnout, or emotional numbness over time.

Healthy grief support helps you:

  • Make sense of complex emotions
  • Reduce self-judgment and isolation
  • Develop coping strategies for emotional waves
  • Rebuild meaning and connection
  • Learn how to carry grief without being consumed by it

At SAVI Therapy Group, we believe you don’t need to rush healing — but you shouldn’t have to carry it alone.

Launching March: Grief & Growth Support Circle

To further support individuals navigating loss, SAVI Therapy Group is launching a Grief & Growth Support Circle beginning in March.

This therapist-led group is designed for adults who want a supportive, structured space to process grief while connecting with others who truly understand the experience of loss. The group will focus on emotional validation, coping skills, shared understanding, and gentle growth — without pressure to “fix” grief or rush healing.

More details and enrollment information will be available soon.

You Don’t Have to Navigate Grief Alone

Grief and loss are universal experiences — but suffering in silence doesn’t have to be part of the journey. Whether you are newly grieving or carrying a loss from years past, support can make a meaningful difference.

If you or someone you love is struggling with grief, SAVI Therapy Group is here to help. We offer compassionate care, practical tools, and a safe space to honor your experience while supporting healing and growth.
